The “march of progress”: the story of a (bad) figure
Abstract
The most widespread image on the subject of human evolution was obtained from the reduction of an illustration by Rudolph Franz Zallinger from 1965. The image is scientifically incorrect (it represents a process of anagenesis rather than cladogenesis) and ideologically unacceptable (it conveys a racist message).
