Abstract

In this column, we present one zoological family group at a time, as an example of animal variety. The family is a taxonomic unit containing a set of species having certain characteristics in common. Here we present a very recently established taxonomic family (Macpherson, Jones & Segonzac, 2005) which opens an interesting window on the ecosystems present in the ocean depths, where solar energy does not penetrate, based on chemosynthesis rather than photosynthesis.
