On the ambiguity of the term descent
Abstract
Darwin approached with caution the question of the descent of man who, on the basis of his theory, underwent a humiliating descent into the animal kingdom. Unlike his friends and collaborators (Lyell, Huxley, Wallace) he was very consistent in supporting the continuity of man with respect to the animal series, not only from a morphological point of view but also on an intellectual and moral level.
