From the antiquity, medicine constitutes a laboratory of great importance for the elaboration of the semiotic terminology. In the Corpus hippocraticum, first, and in the works of Galen, later, we find some of the most important semiotic concepts used later, including the very name of semiotics. The semiotic thought of ancient medicine, that of Galen in particular, would pass to medieval European physicians thanks to the mediation of Arab. In this article we explain how this tradition is transmitted, how medieval physicians understand medicine, what place the semiotics occupies, how they define the signs and how they classify them.
