Abstract

A text can be called foundational when it lays down research guidelines and evaluation criteria that remain valid for a long period of time and for a sizable number of scholars; when it ensures a terminological continuity, and systematically presents the empirical content of a scientific practice and the principles underlining its foreseable development. Following, are a few examples of foundational texts in the history of language theories.
