About the Journal

Dioniso is a journal on ancient drama edited by the Italian National Institute for Ancient Drama (INDA). The Institute launches its first classical plays in Siracusa in 1914. On that occasion, a first bulletin is published, with the title Pubblicaziono del Comitato per le rappresentazioni classiche al Teatro Greco di Siracusa. With the outbreak of the First World War, Siracusa’s Greek Theatre stands empty, and the publication of the bulletin is interrupted. The editorial activity will be resumed seven years later, on the occasion of the second cycle of plays (Aeschylus’ Choephori), and a new bulletin (Rappresentazioni classiche al teatro greco di Siracusa: bollettino del comitato esecutivo) will be published.

In accordance with the plays staged at Siracusa’s Greek Theatre, the editorial choice for these first publications is to combine philological insight with dissemination, in order to create a substantial, as well as easy to read, journal. The issues of the bulletin bear a close relationship with the theatre season, and describe its protagonists – actors, scenographers, translators, musicians, and choreographers –, as well as experiences on the staging in open-air theatres in Italy and Europe.

In 1931, Dioniso is founded. Compared to the previous issues, Dioniso is ever since characterized as a specialized journal, free from the theatre season, covering classical philology and literary criticism, archaeology and history, classical tradition. The journal maintains these guidelines through the 50s and the 60s, under Raffaele Cantarella’s direction.

Following an institutional crisis of Inda, the publication of Dioniso will be resumed in 1975, with new editorial guidelines, which will be maintained until 1994. The publication will be resumed in 2002, as Fondazione Inda annual journal, and again in 2011, under Guido Paduano’s direction. The journal stays true to the aims of Inda: to provide an up-to-date and cutting-edge critical perspective on ancient theatre and its reception.
