Yellow o Savoy? Un’introduzione agli anni Novanta dell’Ottocento

Abstract

Il dibattito sull’ultimo decennio dell’Ottocento in Inghilterra ha spesso indotto a considerare quegli anni come una fase caratterizzata da una notevole disseminazione di idee, opere e atteggiamenti associati alla Decadenza e all’Estetismo. L’analisi di alcuni aspetti delle due riviste più importanti dell’epoca è in grado di fornire un’introduzione più consona a un periodo contrassegnato da contraddizioni e complessità. Il colore giallo, che sembrò connotare il decennio e diede il nome alla sua rivista più importante, fu solo uno di una serie di colori emblematici. Analogamente, lo Yellow Book e il Savoy, nel tentare di trovare un difficile equilibrio tra diverse tendenze e necessità, si fecero portavoce di più di una corrente o prospettiva, restituendo così un quadro composito ed eloquente di quegli anni.
