In 1541 Giraldi Cinzio’s Orbecche, the first modern vernacular tragedy, was staged in Ferrara, boldly bringing Senecan horrors to the stage, and although snubbed by orthodox Aristotelians, it was an extraordinary success and reached audiences throughout Europe through, above all, the Comici dell’Arte.
