As known, Freud’s conception of the transference is modeled on a process which resembles the telepathic exchange. However, this kind of communication seems to refer to a further process, which implies the sleep-wakefulness relationship: the day’s residue’s work. In this article, we will try to analyze some aspects of what Pierre Fédida calls événement du rest (the event of the residue). More to the point, our attempt is to underline how this “event” gives rise to a singular form of community, and how it relates to two of the main psychoanalytic setting tools – the free association and the couch.
