The Italian school needs, starting from kindergarten, a radical renewal of scientific teaching through a "serious" teacher training. Ministerial indications are in fact often disregarded and the critical and anti-dogmatic attitude which is the deepest educational value of scientific teaching is scarcely found in society. The many reflections in the article lead to recognize that the sciences represent one of the cultural cornerstones of our society. Therefore the acquisition of scientific, technological and linguistic skills is crucial for the future of democracy, for sustainable development and the quality of life.
