As last century’s theatre studies have shown, space is one of the fundamental elements of any theatrical act. As such, from a semiotic perspective space bears specific meanings as much as any other element in a play. This paper provides a general overview of both the syntax and the semantics of space in Aristophanic comedy, and aims at explaining why, and how, space can be crucial to a new interpretation of Aristophanic drama.
