The Florentine school of Linguistics is the result of a scientific heritage that goes back to the historical-comparative and philological disciplines cultivated in the Royal Institute of Higher Studies of Florence. Linguistic investigation and its wide range of theoretical and methodological approaches were developed by the intellectual work of enlightened scholars. The wealth of interests and the wide range of research pursued by these scholars have inspired Florentine linguistics and contributed to shaping different lines of research including, among others, the historical-comparative approach, the study of Italic languages, Semitic studies, the history of linguistics, dialectology, sociolinguistics stylistics, textual analysis, semiotics of communication and media, phonology, morpho-syntax, and theoretical linguistics.
