The history of ancient grammar and linguistic ideas is often conducted according to methodological assumptions that hinder the understanding of the purposes and contents of the sources, as in the case where different ancient authors are attributed a homogeneous metalinguistic interest. The case of the secondary categories of αόριστοs and ὡρισμένος, which run through ancient grammar since the Techne of Dionysius Trax, is an example of how the reconstruction of their descriptive function can achieve satisfactory results while if metalinguistic bias is dispensed with.
