The aim of the article is to contribute to the reconstruct of the historical, political and scientific origin of the phenomenon of scolastic 'manualetti' promoted by Giuseppe Lombardo Radice at the beginning of the 20th century in Italy. The role of the dialect is also emphasised through the direct description of the case study Esercizi di traduzione dal dialetto milanese per la terza classe elementare (1924) by the Gruppo d'Azione per le scuole del popolo.
