The aim of this essay is to show that, despite the silence of most scholars on this point, in some works by the Italian philosopher Antonio Labriola it is possible to find an intervention on the question of national language, in the context of a wider reflection on the question of national culture. In particular Della scuola popolare (1888) and Eco dell’italiano parlato (1890) will be considered to understand what role Labriola assigns to the national language, how he conceives it and how he conceives its spread.
